March 1, 2014 Dance with Fresh Cider and Woody Lane

Contra & Square Dance with Fresh Cider and Woody Lane

Fresh Cider is a long-standing band in Seattle. They played for us last year, and are back again!

Woody Lane A caller for more than 25 years, Woody Lane is known for his smooth contras, fast squares, and superb programming. His teaching style is clear and concise. Also an accomplished clogger, he often accompanies the band as a foot percussionist, raising the energy level on the dance floor to wonderful heights. Woody has brought his exciting brand of calling to dances from Alaska to Florida to Boston, and he has a growing reputation throughout the country. A veteran of many calling tours around the U.S., he has also been on staff at numerous dance weekends, including camps in Montana, Oregon, New Mexico, Alaska, Kentucky, and the 2008 National Folk Festival in Butte, Montana. Woody lives in Roseburg, Oregon, in the beautiful southwest corner of the state.

Feb. 1, 2014 dance with the Rose Street Ramblers

Rose St. Ramblers play, with Tom & Amy Wimmer calling

Come to our monthly dance at the Black Diamond Community Hall! Saturday, Feb. 1st, 2014!

The Rose Street Ramblers from Port Townsend keep the kinetic energy of the dance hall elevated with their driving southern dance tunes. The band includes Becky Evasick on fiddle, Dave Thielk on banjo, Carol Hardy on guitar, and Lori Bernstein on bass.  Collectively, the band has over 60 years of contra and square dance band experience! They are actively engaged in promoting old time music and dance, and play regularly for community dances, private parties and house dances.

Tom Wimmer is a mainstay of the Seattle dance scene. He’s been calling contras for many years, and with his wife Amy he organizes the weekly dance at Phinney Ridge. He strives to create a program tailored to the dancers’ skills and tastes, always with fun, interesting dances. Amy and Tom take a break from their usual tasks of herding chickens and project managers to do something more fruitful, like calling a dance.  (Oh, and Amy promises to put down her knitting needles for the evening as well.)  They have been dancing for a long time, and calling for a few years less than that.

Tom will teach a workshop on the basics at 7:30. Come early for an introduction to community dancing. Then the band kicks in from 8:00 to 11:00pm.

Admission is by donation, suggested $8 per adult, $4 for 12-18 year olds. But no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Dance is at the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Rd., Port Angeles, WA 98362. You do not need to come with a partner. Dress is casual, come as you are.

Jan. 4th 2014 dance with Black Diamond Fiddle Club

Black Diamond Fiddle Club plays with Lindsey Dono calling

The January dance is always delightful, with lots of our dispersed friends coming home for the holidays! Come enjoy a warm community gathering, with music by our own local band, the Black Diamond Fiddle Club.

And give a warm Port Angeles welcome to caller Lindsey Dono from Tacoma, in her first time calling for us.

A Massachusetts transplant, Lindsey Dono began dancing in high school and calling in college. With her calm teaching, careful programming, and sunny demeanor, she can coax even the most skittish beginner onto the dance floor. Lindsey also leads workshops for intermediate and advanced dancers that focus on safety, creativity, and community.

When not involved with contra, Lindsey conducts immunology research, practices lindy hop, and crews on a racing yacht.
